My Son Hunter director Robert Davi believes he has found the newest star of the 2022 mid-terms and media publishers worldwide—Hunter Biden’s laptop. The film is being released by the conservative publication Breitbart Media.
Son is the first foray into film distribution by the news website publisher, following a growing trend of conservative media companies like Daily Wire looking tap into an often overlooked audience hungry for right-leaning content.
On August 25th, the full trailer for the film My Son Hunter was released on social media. It has been viewed 2.5 million times and counting.
Breitbart CEO Larry Solov described the docudrama Hunter as a film “they” never wanted you to see.
“They,” in this case, is “Big Tech” and mainstream media companies. Solov contends these groups “colluded” to bury the story about how then-Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, was at the center of a political scandal during the 2020 election.
Hunter Biden’s laptop and Ukraine equal media gold
The notorious laptop in question allegedly contains details of Hunter’s foreign business dealings on its hard drive and has been the subject of much public debate and scrutiny.
Since 2019, rightist pundits have been suggesting that Hunter Biden was selling access to the White House during the Obama administration. If true, they argue, it amounts to major corruption and a national security breach.
Some of the more salacious details regarding this story allegedly include strippers, an illegally purchased firearm, some shady legal dealings with a Ukrainian company named Burisma, and a sizeable amount of drug use.
However, the bigger scandal, according to conservatives, is how “mainstream media” proved its Democrat bias by suppressing this “bombshell” of a story.
Both Hunter and the current president have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
The business of political films
Political documentaries and docudramas can be quite lucrative, as progressive-filmmaker Michael Moore found out in 1989 when he released his film Roger and Me. At the time, the film grossed 7.7 million ($18.4 million in today’s inflation-adjusted money), which was an almost unprecedented box office take for a documentary.
Moore’s arguably most significant success came later in 2002 with the firearms documentary Bowling for Columbine, which garnered a whopping $58 million with a reported budget of just $4 million. (Despite the film’s success, very little legislation has been passed regarding arms sales and firearms are still widely available across the country.)
In the recent past, right-leaning filmmakers like Dinesh D’Souza and Michael Wilson have had varying success tapping into the conservative media market, and Robert Davi seems poised to follow suit.
The value of Hunter Biden’s laptop
Conservative media sites, the GOP, and the broader Republican base in general, are certainly going all-in on this rising star—the now-famous Hunter Biden Laptop currently in FBI hands.
Hunter Biden’s Laptop scandal: is there anything to it?
While the Hunter Biden laptop story creates a lot of heat in media outlets, the question of whether there’s any fire here remains to be seen.
On a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told the host that Facebook did, in fact, limit stories on their news feed relating to the New York Post story about Hunter and the federal investigation into his laptop.
Zuckerberg did so, he said, after warnings from the FBI to take note of the polarizing content and Putin’s intent to use the laptop story as part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
There are many more fine details and subtleties about the significance (or lack of, depending on your point of view) to this scandal—all of the points of interest can’t possibly fit into this one article.
The reality show that is American politics today has just started to gear up for the big season-finale in November, and My Son Hunter may likely reap the early benefits of Hunter Biden laptop mania.
My Son Hunter (Dir. Robert Davi) will be released on Sept. 7th, 2022.
